We’ve been spending quite a bit of time playing in Gabe’s room, which we haven’t done in a very long time! I got down to business a couple weeks ago and did a serious decluttering of his room, and turned it into a very “safe” play area for him. See, the majority of our house is an open floorplan, which makes setting up a place for Gabe to play that has boundaries a bit challenging. When he gets the urge to “roam” and I need to let him go on autopilot, rather than hovering over to stop every time he gets somewhere that’s a no-no, he gets to play in his room.

Daddy joined us upstairs on Sunday, so he got to see first hand how Gabe makes his way around the room.

One of Gabe’s favorite things is to pull out his drawer of discarded pacifiers (baby shower gifts that didn’t end up being his preferred style) and test them out.

One paci in each hand!

He’s taken on the habit of running over to us and stealing hugs while he’s playing, which is heart-warming, and doesn’t ever need to stop as far as we’re concerned!

Cutie Pie!

It’s been too long! Gabe learned a new trick today, as you can see up above. What a quick learner.

Since we last checked in, Gabe has cut two more teeth–one on bottom and another on top, and aside from some mild crankiness, you wouldn’t even have known it. I know people give me crazy looks when they ask about Gabe’s amber necklace, but every time he cuts another tooth, I can’t help but wonder if it’s what’s helping us through it. It certainly can’t hurt.

I’d started signing with Gabe a couple months ago, and he’s started to pick up on it and sign back to me. So far, he clearly signs to nurse, and he will sign for “more” and “all done” at mealtime. Unfortunately, his motions on those two aren’t terribly precise, and are actually pretty much indistinguishable. I’m hoping that with time and practice, we’ll be able to work it out. In the meantime, I’m just excited that we’re communicating with each other, and I’m beginning to be able to meet his needs and wants without guesswork or frustration. I’ve just introduced the sign for “water,” so we’ll see how well he picks up and demonstrates that one!

David came over for a visit the other day. He’s just started walking, so we now have two walking little boys! Which means that my job as photog has gotten a lot harder these days.

Witness how they walked around the living room shaking around their prized possessions–for Gabe, David’s sweater. For David, Gabe’s sock. I’m not kidding.

Gabe and I went to Costco the other day for the best-priced (and tasting) rotisserie chicken in town (and a couple other miscellaneous things).

I decided to keep the box we brought home rather than putting it in the recycling right away. It seemed like a good idea.

The funny thing? Gabe doesn’t appear to be too good at climbing out of the thing.

But he sure looks cute when he’s in it!

Meanwhile, I’ve been busy running around town with this guy–we took advantage of a unseasonably warm day last week and hit up a babywearing meeting a local park, stopped by Toddler Time on Thursday, and most exciting of all, stopped in for a visit at Uncle Alan’s practice.

When we stopped Gabe’s casts last year, Uncle Alan had said that he’d want to see Gabe again once he started walking.

Admittedly, it’s been a few weeks since he started walking. I told myself that I was waiting for Gabe to gain some stability, balance…that yes, he was walking, but he wasn’t walking enough to warrant the appointment. To be perfectly honest, I think a small part of me was putting it off…because I couldn’t bear the thought of getting bad news. The first few months of Gabe’s life were so hard…for all the usual reasons that come along with newbornhood and infanthood, but those reasons were magnified by the heavy and cumbersome shoes and casts on his feet. Shoes and casts that were helping him, yes. But those same tools made me miserable, made my and Michael’s jobs harder, and quite often, were physically painful on my end (have you ever been kicked in the chin by a baby in a cast?).

Anyhow, I finally sucked it up and made the appointment, and we weren’t settled into the waiting room for two minutes before Gabe had several visitors–members of office’s staff who’d known him since he was a teeny little baby–come by to visit with the little man. It was cute to see him walking around the rows of chairs, amusing himself while his audience fawned over his good looks, how much he’s grown, etc.

Oh, and the verdict? His feet are great. We need to check back in a year. Phew!

“No big deal, Mom!”

Gabe and David were supposed to have a playdate at the Aquarium today. But I injured my foot recently, and though I’m off crutches now, I definitely pay for it if I overdo it and do too much walking. So David and Auntie Yana came over to see us instead!

And this is what happened as soon as I pulled out my camera. Taking pictures…it just isn’t as easy as it was when he had no idea what this big black thing was.

This guy is less interested, which is nice! He’s more focused on sucking on his two fingers, and watching his cousin toddle around.

David also fell in love with the toy remote Gabe got in his stocking from Santa this year. I think he’s going to find a new one at his house soon.

I mean, come on. Look at this face. I don’t think his mama can deny him.

Thank heaven for little boys that sit still…if only for a few seconds at a time.

In fact, we have been busy–this guy doesn’t stop moving for one minute, when he’s free to roam (he hangs out contentedly in his pack & play occasionally, which lets me take care of things without worrying about dropping everything to chase him at the same time). He’s continuing to get better and better at walking, though Michael and I are still leery of letting him try out his skills outside the home–say, on sidewalks.

Michael and I were at Chili’s with Gabe yesterday for lunch, and since we had to wait a little bit for a table, Michael took Gabe outside for a little bit of playtime. They walked along the sidewalk together, holding hands, which made Gabe feel quite confident in his walking skills–he moved around much faster than normal. When we walked back toward the door, a gentleman stepped out with his party, took a look at Gabe, gave him two thumbs up, and exclaimed, “Lookin’ good!” . At lunch, we were seated next to a table with a little girl that looked to be about Gabe’s age, and the two couldn’t keep their eyes off each other. Seems little ones don’t quite get the concept of “playing hard to get”!

More funny faces from Gabriel:

Gabe is full-on walking now, and it’s so much fun to watch our little guy toddle around! He loves going exploring around the house, and even giggles and squeals as he walks. It really gives him a thrill, I think. Getting to this walking milestone has taken up the majority of Gabe’s time and energy, and he’s getting better with balance, catching himself if hits uneven ground, and even ducking under things as he walks past them (i.e. our dining room table!). He’s such a smart little boy, and I’m so excited to watch him learn more and more.

And besides the times when he’s hungry, tired, teething, etc–basically all the times that he’s cranky…which can be often, I’ll admit, he is really and truly such a happy little guy. He lights up and smiles and bounces for everyone who stops to talk to him, and he cheers and squeals through his favorite meals (oatmeal and Mathis Madness are his great loves, but this kid doesn’t seem to be a picky eater, knockonwood, so he gets excited for most anything). When he’s contented playing with a toy or flipping through a book, he babbles and giggles to himself. There are times, when I’m on the floor playing with him, that he’ll walk over to me for a hug. Happy times!

And with that, I’ll leave you with this gem. This kid’s sense of humor is easy as pie, too.

Gabe found a new favorite toy the other day.

Hampers are awesome!

It was actually full at first, and I was trying to put together some clean diapers, but he wouldn’t leave the hamper alone. So I emptied the clean stuff onto our bed, and brought out the hamper for him to explore. Verdict? It’s awesome.

His other most favorite toy? The toy remote control that was in his stocking from Santa.

If you look, you’ll see that when he isn’t playing with it, he still drags it with him everywhere. When he’s downstairs, Michael says that he sounds like he’s got a “peg leg”. Silly boys!

And when the crawling toward me starts, the camera has to go down. There is no more focusing on this boy. Literally.

Between Gabe’s birthday party and Christmas, we had a busy week since he turned one seven days ago. In that week, we’ve seen our boy smash up a birthday cake (or rather, fingerpaint on his highchair tray with icing), open up and delight at Christmas presents, and explore so many new toys and books from his birthday loot!

We took him to his 12 month doctor’s appointment on Monday, where the poor thing had two vaccines (a delayed schedule–we’ll come back for two more in a month. I didn’t want to overload his body with four of them all at once), and had his blood drawn. The good news is that he’s healthy and growing, actually having gone up slightly in the height percentile, and though he’s dropped a bit in the weight percentile, it’s to be expected as babies get more mobile and spend less time nursing.

Gabe’s also on a three meal, two snack regimen now, a stark difference from the “under one, food is for fun” routine of the past. He’s now eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with us (usually a portion of whatever we’re having), and taking in more solids than he ever has before. He’s an enthusiastic and fairly indiscriminate eater, which makes me a very happy mama.

And here’s the photo evidence to prove it from tonight’s dinner of Mathis Madness .
